Standing at the Edge

I stand at the edge now
This last moment together
The tears are my guide
Showing what I must bear

I see the shrouded box lower
For the Earth to consume
Disregarding the cries of my heart
that witnesses my pending doom

No more I will hold
Your body that made me feel
That I belonged to someone
That made me feel real

No more will I feel
My heart sink and rise
A life that was truly lived
with meaning, love, and light

The rain hides my tears
Telling me to be brave
But what is the need for bravery
When my heart is being buried in this grave

I want you to come back
This cannot be our end
I want to live forever with you
This dying dream’s last demand

These people who stand here now
Will never know what we shared
My heart is so lost and broken
At the visitation of unexpected death

I feel a cold hand touch mine
And I look down to see why
I see your eyes in our child
Looking to see strength in mine

You’ve left me a great gift, my wife
You’ve given me back both of us
The child who stands beside me now
It’s the life I will live for us
